Understanding the treatment

What is Lacrifill?

Lacrifill is a cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel placed within the small channels that drain tears from your eyes. By blocking drainage, it helps your natural tears remain on the eye’s surface longer.

Unlike an artificial tear, it works inside the drainage system. Unlike a traditional solid punctal plug, it uses a gel to fill the channel.

Results vary. Your doctor will discuss whether this approach matches the cause of your symptoms.

What to expect

01

Evaluate

We review symptoms, current treatments and tear drainage before recommending treatment.

02

Treat

Numbing drops are used. Your doctor places gel through the small tear-drainage opening during an office procedure.

03

Follow up

We monitor your response. At six months, the gel should be removed by irrigation; we then reassess whether to repeat treatment.

A plan built around your eyes

Dry eye can have
more than one cause.

Tear retention addresses drainage. Your evaluation may also identify meibomian gland dysfunction, ocular rosacea or inflammation that needs separate care.

Ask how Lacrifill fits alongside your existing treatments. Continue prescribed drops unless your doctor changes your instructions.

Is it right for you?

An examination matters. Existing excessive tearing, blocked tear drainage, eyelid inflammation, active eye-area infection or an allergy to the materials may rule out treatment.

Before you decide

Common questions

How long does Lacrifill last?

It is indicated for use for up to six months. Schedule follow-up for removal and reassessment rather than assuming the gel dissolves on its own.

Will I still need eye drops?

You may. Your treatment plan depends on your examination and response. Tear retention does not address every contributor to dry eye.

Are there risks?

Possible complications include irritation, excessive tearing and infection. Contact our office if you develop pain, discharge or worsening symptoms. Removal is usually attempted with irrigation; additional procedures may sometimes be necessary.

Is it covered by insurance?

Coverage and out-of-pocket costs depend on your plan and clinical circumstances. Ask our team to review your benefits and expected costs before treatment.
